Violence at Chauri Chaura on 4 February led Gandhi to suspend the Non-Cooperation Movement; in March he was tried for sedition and sentenced to six years' imprisonment. The Gaya Congress sharpened the division over council entry, leading to the formation of the Swaraj Party in 1923, while the abolition of the Ottoman Sultanate weakened the Khilafat cause.
