India · 1985Rajiv Gandhi's year of accords: Assam, Punjab and the anti-defection law

With a record Lok Sabha mandate from the 1984 elections, Rajiv Gandhi's government signed the Assam Accord and the Rajiv–Longowal (Punjab) Accord and enacted the anti-defection law through the 52nd Amendment. The Shah Bano verdict, the Kanishka bombing and SAARC's founding at Dhaka also marked the year.
