On 26 November 1949 the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution, with most provisions to take effect on 26 January 1950. The same year Hindi in Devanagari script was adopted as the Union's official language, the RBI was nationalised, princely-state integration advanced, and India chose to remain a republic in the Commonwealth.
