At its Surat session (December 1907) the Congress split into Moderates and Extremists, weakening the organisation during the Swadeshi phase. The year also saw the deportation of Lajpat Rai and Ajit Singh, Bhikaji Cama's display of an Indian flag at Stuttgart, and the registration of the Tata Iron and Steel Company.
