India · 1878Lytton's Vernacular Press Act and Arms Act tighten colonial control

Lord Lytton's government passed the Vernacular Press Act (14 March 1878), the Indian Arms Act and the Indian Forest Act, tightening control over the vernacular press, arms possession and forests. The measures came during the Great Famine of 1876–78, and the Second Anglo-Afghan War began in November 1878.
